Sarah Van Bas is a British contemporary artist renowned for her large-scale mirror works that fuse bold language with seductive, nostalgic, and emotionally charged imagery. Instantly recognisable for their aesthetic intensity and striking use of text, her works explore themes of desire, identity, femininity, self-love, and cultural memory through reflective surfaces that draw the viewer directly into the piece.

Strongly influenced by her years within the music and fashion industries, Van Bas draws upon the visual language of iconic album covers, editorial photography, alluring advertising, erotic nostalgia and popular culture. Combining provocative phrases, lyrics, sensual imagery, and layered compositions, she creates works that feel both powerful and intimate, balancing glamour with emotional depth and a distinctly female gaze. Her pieces carry the energy of a sexy love letter, a soundtrack, or a forgotten fragment of visual history.

Educated at the London College of Printing, Van Bas works across fine art, printmaking, silkscreen, collage, photography and digital media. Central to her practice is the traditional craft of verre églomisé, hand silvering mirrors and reverse painting onto glass to create richly layered reflective surfaces. Blending contemporary image making with artisanal process, her works possess both a striking visual immediacy and a tactile sense of craftsmanship.

Through her recent signature mirror works, Sarah invites the viewer to temporarily become part of the piece, reflecting themselves both literally and emotionally. As she explains, “Whether refracting the gaze or revealing the truth within, mirrors carry powerful symbolism. In ancient cultures, they were more than reflective surfaces, they were symbols of magic and wisdom, not only showing you physical experience but connecting to a spiritual world - portals to insight, protection, and healing. For me, they are powerful tools for healing the soul, emotional transformation and self-affirmation.”

Her work has been exhibited internationally across Europe and the United States and is held in private collections worldwide. Resonating with collectors drawn to visually striking, emotionally charged, sophisticated works, Van Bas creates pieces that combine craftsmanship, cultural memory and contemporary expressions of femininity and desire.
